Your final task

Congratulations on arriving at your final task for this webquest! We have explored important concepts like socialization, gender, and gender identity. Now its time for you to put together what you have learned in a final project. Take a couple of minutes to review the vocabulary words below. You can click on the left and right arrows to see new words. When you are done, move on to the first assignment.

Gender identity

Your sense of what gender(s), if any, with which you identify. This is a your internal sense and not to be confused with external expression.

Gender Expression

The external expression of your gender identity, which can include appearance, behavior, and voice.

Cisgender

An individual whose gender identity matches the sex they were designated at birth.

Gender-Fluid

The feeling that your gender identity is not fixed in time or identity. A gender-fluid person can identify as multiple genders and feel more like one or the other at different points in time.

Gender Role

Behaviors and beliefs that a cultural group deems appropriate for people based on their designated sex.

Transgender

Describes people who have a gender identity that is different from the sex assigned at birth.

Nonbinary

A person who does not exclusively identify as one of the two genders on the gender binary, male or female.

Assigned Sex

The sex assigned to an infant at birth based on the child’s visible sex organs, including genitalia and other physical characteristics.

Genderfluid

Describes a person who does not consistently adhere to one fixed gender and who may move among genders.

1. Watch the the videos on this page. As you watch them, think about the gender stereotypes that are portrayed. After you watch the films, write a paragraph that answers the question, How do gender roles define people?

2.  Gender Lightbulb Moment: A “gender lightbulb moment” is a time you became aware of being treated differently because of your gender. For example, a girl not being allowed to play football, or a boy being told he shouldn’t play with dolls. It could encompass anything from the toys you were allowed to play with or being aware of different rules for boys and girls, to feeling uncomfortable because of your gender in a certain situation.

Think back on your own life journey so far. Has there been a gender lightbulb moment for you? Take a moment and describe that experience. What happened? How did you respond? How did you feel then? Have your feelings changed since then? Would you respond differently today?
